The Only Prescription

There is a condition prevalent in almost every church. This chronic condition impairs one’s mind and can sometimes cause bodily fatigue. Many times this condition is self-induced with the cure living right inside of them. One may have every desire to quit this habit, but not be able to trust Jesus 100%. This condition can be a black cloud that never clears. The problem can hinder one’s ability to walk. This problem is common in children all the way to the elderly and is one of Satan’s most used devices. This is not drug or alcohol related, but just caused by not trusting in the Lord.

Philippians 4:6 (“Be careful for nothing, but everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be known unto God.”), not only shows the cure for this condition but also how to use it. Worry and anxiety have hindered the followers of Christ all the way back to the time of the disciples. They were toiling and fretting the storm (problems of this world) while Jesus had already conquered it. Worry and anxiety is common in good Christians but can ultimately keep them from their commission and His word. Not only does it hinder your walk, but through example shows the lost a lack of trust in Jesus. “For our light affliction, which is for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” 2nd Corinthians 4:17. Paul uses a sharp contrast in the words light, weight, moment, and eternal. There are handbooks which show medications, their effects, and what they cure. The living Word of God is out handbook in which every worry of this world is addressed.

There are three major areas where worry and anxiety can begin; Jesus speaks of some of these issues in Matthew 6. The first issue is anxiety about the necessities of life. A person may worry that they are on the verge of losing their house, but the Bible speaks of our real home that is planted in heaven with our Father. John 14:1-3, 2nd Corinthians 5:1. In Matthew 6:25, 26, we are commanded to take no thought for our lives that the Lord feeds the fowls and will also feed us. Did he not feed the 5,000? Our health, along with the health of our loved ones is another source of worry and anxiety. “Which of you taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature.” Matthew 6:27. This verse spoken by Jesus helps remind us that worry can not help our stature or health. It is hard to cast our cares upon the Lord, but he is our physician. We should have the faith of the centurion in Luke chapter 7 when it seems so hard. Lastly, we worry about the loss of peace of mind when worry does just that. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and is spoken of many times in the Bible. We can walk around being prisoners of fear, not knowing how to defend ourselves from worry and anxiety as taught in Ephesians chapter 6. Once we obtain peace through Jesus Christ, worry and anxiety should have no root. Philippians 4:7 says: “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Our Lord and Saviour knew what lay before him, but carried on to finish His Father’s will. It is natural to have concern about areas in our life, but we always need to trust in the Lord. If this condition is slowly taking over your life, remember: there is only one prescription, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word.
